Day 10: MR. RIGHT

Well acted and edited (boy was it edited!) Took me at least 45 mintes to figure out what the heck was going on here. Add to that the fact that I probably missed a good half of the dialog because of the accents, and this movie wasn't a favorite for me. I'm so glad our wonderful programmers didn't make this the opening night movie like NYC did...it would have a big disapointment for me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bob. This was an amusing film but I'm glad it we had a better one for our opening night. This film does have a great ensemble of characters. I could easily see this as a pilot for a TV series, ala
ReplyDelete"Queer as Folk".

ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I particularity liked that it held your attention because you had to pay attention to figure out what was going. I also liked that it was not evident how everything was going to work out in the final scene. The music was great and the opening and closing credits were stylish. I would have much preferred this for opening night. The character of Alex, the caterer, was my favorite portrayal of a gay man of all the narrative films in the festival. The strength he showed his decision to take control of his own life and turn the negatives into positives was very affirming.
ReplyDeleteI was touched by this film on many levels. Like Richard, I found the line-up of people and the fast pace of the movie more of an enjoyment than a challenge. It is fast paced though, and I'm sure I'll pick up a few things watching it a second or third time (if I get that priviledge) that I missed in the blur the first time.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that this was not an easy film to predict, though having just recently played the part of Harry to an Alex in my own life, I really should have seen in coming. I'm hoping to find a Lars next. (Did you hear that Louise? Get on it!) :)
I'm not sure it would have been fitting for an opening movie, though it could have been a strong closing night movie. I'm just happy that despite it's placement it still drew quite a nice audience.
This movie was done well. Yeah, there was a rush of characters in the beginning and some of the accents were hard to pick up but once the stories developed and the characters were sorted out, the charm and style of the film took over.
ReplyDeleteThe plots were believable and not every ending for every character was happy or joyous. Nice to see some realism. Also, the music was great. Enjoyed it immensely!
I love that there was a great turnout for this film. However, while most people thoroughly enjoyed this British ensemble piece, it got some "fair" votes for the accents and the ensemble aspect of it. I personally enjoyed the film so much more when I watched it with the audience again (i've only seen the DVD screener once before). I think this is one of those that would probably benefit from a second viewing. So maybe a good DVD rental? =)
