Valky-what?

So you've probably seen the trailer for the new Tom Cruise project VALKYRIE opening this Christmas. It looks good and grand, although I have issues with the hairstyling of TC's character. But how come no one is talking about the movie. And it's not figuring prominently in the early awards. Have critics even seen it yet?

The even bigger question is: Can you still take Tom Cruise seriously?

I don't know about taking Tom Cruise seriously but I'm giving the film some credit because of the topic that I just love!

The topic is not one I love, and I have seen the trailer for this film 4 or 5 times and it doesn't make me want to see the movie.
I could probably take most any other actor with an eye patch, but I think Tom Cruise looks rediculous.

When did all the Tom Cruise hatred begin? The Oprah couch-as-trampoline incident? The Matt Lauer interview? Are people and critics just being too hard on the guy?

I don't know exactly when Tom Cruise starring in a film ceased to be a draw for me, but I have to say, I liked this film, and I was very nervous going in that I would not enjoy it. It was a story I was not familiar with before seeing the movie, and I feel for the most part, it was successfully brought to life on screen, although I haven't decided whether it was because or in spite of Mr. Cruise. However, in the recent flood of WWII/Nazi-themed films, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" was far superior.

I still haven't seen VALKYRIE and I have a post in draft about the holocaust related films that came out one after another (THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS, THE READER, VALKYRIE, DEFIANCE) late in 2008. I personally wasn't too thrilled with STRIPED PAJAMAS. It seems very contrived and you could see the ending from a mile away. I also couldn't get past the characters speaking with an English accent. In the end, I didn't know what the film is trying to say. That during the holocaust, sometimes the wrong people get sent to the gas chambers? Well, duh! But I enjoyed the finely acted THE READER immensely. I guess I'll have to see VALKYRIE this weekend.
