Hilarious, funny, touching. This was the best "lesbian relationship" movie screened this year. The two lead actors were perfect for their roles and their relationship was totally believable. The supporting cast was also very good. I was surprised how much this movie had to offer--the plot (while obviously medically inaccurate) was rich with realistic secondary storylines surrounding the central story of the two pregnancies. Great film for the last day of the fest.
The announcement of the fathers Alzheimer’s and the subsequent suicide wrecked the movie for me. I much prefer when a movie is going in the zany over-the-top direction that it go all the way and leave the heavy stuff behind. I think the same touching points could have been made and the feel good ending achieved without the inclusion of that story line.
This movie was one of the better ones in the lineup this year, and I'm very sad that is had such poor attendance, especially by the women in our community.
The leads were both so believable, and the footage shot in such a way that one almost feels like they're watching a roughly cut documentary.
The families were both touching and to some degree unexpected when first introduced. I enjoyed how they pulled in the brother as a jerk, but later showed him more as a real person. I found the Alzheimer's sub-plot (as short as it was) to be a very touching spot in the movie. While it could have been left out, I think it's inclusion was a good choice as it provided a clear reason for the mother's abrupt about face on her devicive and militant anti-gay stance. Without her husband's death, and her emotional break down because of it, her sudden change would have been out of place and probably would have had a contrived feeling to it.
This is a great comedy that really points out the plight and trials of lesbians (and to some extent gay men) trying to make families that are inclusive of both partners. The style of the movie is great, and the subtle ways that hits are dropped through wording and cut style are priceless.
Baby Formula is definitely one of three films (the other ones being Baby Love and, to a certain extent, Drool) that I felt deserved a much larger audience than they got -- only because they seem to have everything that the audiences would be looking for in a movie, and, to me, they seem to be easy to sell. I don't really know what more we could have done to promote and push these films. But I'm just glad that the feedback has been great.
Someone pointed out that maybe it should have played earlier in the schedule. I don't think that's the issue. We screened The Gymnast in the same time slot a couple of years ago and we had a huge turnout. I just think the women must have stayed away because of the topic of babies. Oh well.
