Day 6: TRAINING RULES

Audiences are in for two well-made and fascinating documentaries at the Ingle Auditorium tonight. First up is Training Rules. It is stunning how many careers and even lives were destroyed by this one coach and her homophobic ways!

NOTE: the short film Claiming the Title:Gay Olympics on Trial screened as part of this program.

I'm glad that this story is being told. While I am glad that Penn State is finally waking up, it took the powers that be there WAY too long to get rid of Rene Portland her hateful, hurtful and evil homophobic attitude.

Wouldn't it be great to see Penn State Women's Basketball team win a National Championship without Portland and with a bunch of lesbians on the team?

I was pleased to see a nice turn-out for this film. "Training Rules" was one of the first films I screened this year and I was immediately hooked by this great story, and the courage of the young ladies who "fought the power."
I agree, Tracy, except I hope PSU doesn't win anything until Joe Paterno is gone, since he enabled the situation by his hiring and then protection of Portland.

Great documentary well told. ImagOut did a terrific job on the documentaries I saw. Great stories and film making Swimming with Lesbians, Training Rules, Edie and Thea, Ferron ( I had no idea who she was other than a lesbian musician and it was wonderful) and the other movie Watercolors was just as wonderful. Thank you thank you thank you

Ballot comment from Amy:
I enjoyed TRAINING RULES. In High School, I had a coach who verbally and emotionally abused our entire team and ruined the game for me. Why are coaches allowed to belittle players for any reason?

Ballot comment:
TRAINING RULES should be a mandatory documentary for all young girl athletes so that they know what has happened in the past and how to prevent this from occurring again. Excellent!

Ballot comment:
RULES exposed entrenched systematic hatred of lesbians at PSU. Provides hope for true equality in the world of women's sports.

Ballot comment:
This screen is too small for the room - and there's an annoying spot of light on the screen during the screening.

Good idea to involve RIT - good sight lines too but 4 hours (two shows) in these seats are hard on the lightly padded posterior!

Love the ImageOut beginning to movies. Great graphics!

Michael's comment:
Thanks. Coming up with our annual ImageOut trailer is just as stressful as picking out the movies. LOL. Again thanks to Greg Winter for working on this with me and to Matt DeTurck for his fine job behind the camera.

Unfortunately, I had to leave TRAINING RULES early for class, but what I saw of it hit really close to home. It was hard to watch because I was in her club for younger girls and always looked to her as a role model until all this came out (and I was aware of it). An excellent film.

Films paired well. Great documentary about the homophobia @ Penn State. I never knew about the coach. Story was well told.

Is there a follow-up to the Gay Olympics?

Damn R. Portland!

Michael's comment:
Not sure there is yet. But I will definitely monitor for it.
