Just got home from seeing a great and fun movie in this last day of the festival "He's Such a Girl". It really was a nice way to end our long movie days.
I'm so torn on this movie. I think the actor who played Aldo was a horrible actor, but I did enjoy the love triangle between Taylor, Tara and Whitney. One other thing that kept me from enjoying this film was the religious undertones. As someone who never really felt comfortable in church until recently (I attend Community Christian on Chili Ave, an open and accepting UCC church), I am constantly disheartened by the portrayal of religion in LGBT films. Yes, I understand that fundamentalism is, basically, the root of all evil, but there are so many accepting churches out there. And to keep perpetuating this stereotype of religious hatred of gays and lesbians really hurts the churches who are trying to change that. I understand the need to make people aware of the blatant homophobia in many churches, but I wish once in awhile we could see a positive portrayal of Christianity in an LGBT film.
I liked the movie, but felt in some ways it was a little contrived. Anything that could be exaggerated was, from the extreme religion, to the blackmailing, to the new job... The even as the randomness and extremism surged the lead doesn't seem to really be affected by anything. I can't blame it all on the actor either, since you can't read emotion into something when the lines aren't there to read...@Sara: There have been many Christian affirming films in ImageOut over the years. Reality is that in the majority of the US (and the world), religion is used more as a weapon against the LGBT community than as a support. While there are many accepting churches in Rochester and a few other progressive cities, you'd be hard pressed to find them in the majority of places in the country or the world.Honestly, the religiosity of the family portrayed isn't specifically dictated as christian, other than quoting the bible. Mormons, catholics, and jehovahs witnesses quote the bible too, but most wouldn't claim them to be christians. I think most people would be hard pressed to find the sect/cult they were portraying here, or to associate them with any mainstream group. It was one of many exaggerations that just made the movie less believable, and frankly less entertaining.
