And the premieres just keep on coming! Hit the Dryden Theater at 6:45 today for the New York State premiere of Gigola, a sexy ride through the red light district of Paris in the 1960s. Sex, organized crime, and flashy tailored suits--who could ask for anything more on a sunny Sunday afternoon?

I wonder if there really was an 1960s-Paris underbelly like this. Cute and quirky, and definitely NOT a stock plot rewritten for the LGBT audience. It might not be on everyone's "favorite" list, but you haven't seen too many films like this one!
This is not a "typical" LGBT film. The plot and the lead actor propel the film to intriguing places. Scene to scene I was left wondering where this charming film was going. I am very glad to have seen this.
OK. I didn't like it. I thought it just did not come together. The acting was good. The film was beautifully filmed and had lots of lovely shots. The costumes and sets were fantastic. The plot had interesting elements. The cabaret acts were fun. I don't know if it was the writing or the directing, but it lacked a lot in character development and movement for me. Try as I might, I just did not care about Gigola or any of the other characters and I found it impossible to get into the film. We never saw Gigola at her most vulnerable, the moment that Sybil left her, which might have helped. A lot of the "plot twists" seemed like throwaways and didn't add any tension or movement to the plot. I hate to say that, while it was lovely to look at, I just didn't enjoy Gigola. I don't know. I felt like the potential was there, but it was not fully realized. I usually like the "out-there" flicks too, so I was surprised to be so disappointed. Oh well...I am glad others enjoyed and the great thing about ImageOut is that there are movies for everyone!
