Miss North Carolina wins Miss USA 2009

And you probably don't care, right? LOL. Well hear me out here for a second. As in most Latin American countries, beauty pageants in the Philippines, where I grew up, are just like any huge sporting events -- they are popular and they are big business. So to this day, I still love my pageants and beauty queens. Not to mention those male pageants. (Starts daydreaming.)

Anyway, so last night was the Miss USA Pageant 2009 which was being shown live from Las Vegas. I must admit though that pageants today are not as exciting as they used to be. So I was going through my mail and paying some bills while the show was on -- interesting semi-finalists, nice swimsuits, lovely gowns, boring co-hosts, blah blah blah. As with the judges, my favorite was also Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton. So she was definitely going to win unless she tripped on her flowing gown and fell flat on her face with her hair catching fire somehow.

During the final Q&A portion, the questions the judges were throwing at the finalists were too political and painfully issues-centric, I thought. Do they want these girls to have embarassing moments posted on YouTube (hello, Miss Teen South Carolina 2007 Caitlin Upton - I told you I know my pageants and queens!)? Then the eyebrow-raising moment of the pageant came on from out of the blue.

Miss California Carrie Prejean was asked by judge Perez Hilton (Why is this guy even deserving of a celebrity status? But i digress.) about legalizing same-sex marriage. And I quote the blonde beauty's reply: "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised." Huh? The audience applauded wildly. But then again, most of those people were probably just cheering for her regardless and probably didn't even realize what her answer was.

To her credit, at least Miss Prejean did not give a pageant patty type answer that was politically correct especially considering who (Perez - gay, gay, gay!) was asking her the question. She stood by her beliefs, no matter how ignorant they were. But once again, Miss Prejean just gives a face to that majority that voted for Proposition 8 in California last year. It's scary how clueless some of these normal looking (even beautiful!) Americans are.

Stefan likes this. (Michael's post, not what Miss California said of course!)

I think I believe that in my country, in my family, I think I like Stefan's comment too. =)

It should be noted that the audience clapped pretty wildly when Perez asked the question, so there was definitely some same-sex support shown as well.

The more pressing issue, though, is where will Miss Prejean get her roots bleached now that she's alienated every gay man in the country.

Well, I think I believe that in my household in my community, in my family...I wouldn't be caught dead watching the Miss USA Pageant!

However, while you were watching it, Michael, I was at the marvelous Little Theater watching a movie that I would like to heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys a good thriller, well written and acted, full of twists and surprises. The new Russell Crowe-Ben Affleck-Helen Mirren film STATE OF PLAY is just such a movie. I liked it as did my friend who accompanied me.

By the way...I LOVED Bittersweet Sage's comment!!

I am a VERY strong (straight) supporter of gay rights, but, at least Miss CA. actually anwered the question given. Unlike my delegate, Miss AZ, who TOTALLY skated around universal healthcare. Between the two issues, I do think it is more important than gay marriage.

I wondered if Miss Arizona actually heard the question right as she kept blabbering about integrity. What? Did she have a list of ready answers and just picked one that she thought would work? Surprisingly though, she kept her third ranking with that stupid non-answer. And what's with her hair? I never understood why she ranked so high. There were better girls, definitely. But I'm happy that Miss North Carolina won. I hope she does well in Bahamas in August.

The scary thing is if the current Miss USA (North Carolina) wins in the Miss Universe Pageant in August, the current first runner-up (Miss California) takes her place as Miss USA. Suffice it to say that Same-Sex Marriage won't be in her platform for her reign.

If you liked that, then you'll also like my "Queer Eye for the Protestor Guy."

YES, Bittersweet Sage...I just read your blog, and enjoyed your comments very much! That lone protester looked like he grabbed a piece of flimsy cardboard and a sharpie on his way out the door and wrote the sign while he was driving to the "protest"! Pretty poor display all the way around, if you ask me.

Apparently Miss CA is now going to be the face of anti-gay marriage in their new ad campaign. So whatever happened to her "humanitarian" and beauty-pageant friendly platforms as Miss California? Now she found a polarizing issue to advocate that would keep her in the spotlight and probably earn her some money. She's nothing more than a media wh*re, if you ask me. She needs to give up that state crown if she is going to be more of a divisive force than a leader.
