My mother always told me, if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything. With that in mind, here are my thoughts on this movie:
The houses in which the movie was set were both quite lovely.
LOL...I didn't see this movie (I was at FIT---which was very endearing)...but Woody's comment made me laugh out loud at my desk...LOL
The Programming Team is prepared for reactions such as yours, Woody. =) Did you like the short film, YOU MOVE ME?
Yes, I would like to hear what everyone thought of both the short and the feature!
And btw, we DO want to hear when you didn't like something. Especially if you can think of what you didn't like about it. It helps us plan for the future! Woody, I fully understand if you just plain old didn't like it. Your comment made me laugh too!
I was really disappointed with this feature. I had been looking forward to it because of the iconic actresses in it. (Go Fish and Watermelon Woman were released when I was newly out.)
The plot was really dumb, the script was sparse, the acting was poor, the mystery was predictable.
It was sad to see how Guin has aged. She was a hotty when I met her in NYC when she was promoting Go Fish.
The side comments were inconsistent. At times they stayed in character and at other times they were themselves as actresses.
I fell asleep. But I agree with Woody- the house was nice!
I have to say, I loved the short before this movie. It was quite funny, though the end bit with playing with the dog was... disconcerting? :)
As for OWLs, I agree with most of what Michelle had to say. I was especially confused about how the "thought" interviews changed into actress interviews and back. And really, at the end, I didn't really care which one it was, or why...
I gotta say, I'm not surprised to see these comments. My wife wanted to see this film, but after watching the hackneyed trailer, we decided against it. When a film can't even seem good in a trailer, well, that's just sad. It seemed too reminiscent of the horrible "Go Fish" (in only my opinion, I understand many people love that film) for me to even consider it. However, I did see 9 other diverse films in the fest and loved them all! Great line-up this year.
From the ballots:
Very disappointed!
From the ballots:
THE OWLS was technically well done, I guess ... but I HATED it!
From the ballots:
* THE OWLS was absolutely boring. The plot was ordinary. This film lacked any excitement. Too much emphasis on labels.
* YOU MOVE ME was hilarious.
From the ballots:
OWLS - really bad. I went to sleep.
From the ballots:
Weird. Not worth the time!
From the ballots:
Awful -- kept waiting for it to get better and IT NEVER DID!
From the ballots:
OWLS - SUCKS! Disjointed and self-important BULLSHIT. They must have taken too many drugs in their youth - older wiser lesbians are disappointed in the treatment in this story. There must be a message but I did not get it although I was willing.
From the ballots:
THE OWLS - slow, slow, slow. Terrible! Wisdom?!
From the ballots:
Contrived, poor story. Processing interrupted the story ... oh but there was no story. No wisdom. Poor characters. Yuck!
From the ballots:
65 minutes of people I didn't care about.
From the ballots:
WEIRD! I did not enjoy this film.
From the ballots:
OWLS was weird - did not like.
Short was fun!
From the ballots:
As someone for whom 40 is still a baby dyke, I was disappointed there weren't real OWLS in this.
From the ballots:
THE OWLS - very hard to understand. Didn't make sense.
YOU MOVE ME - very funny!

General comment: It's been 2 years since we've been in town for the Festival -- we have to choose between this or women's week in P-town (HORRIBLE to have to choose ... Sophie?). but this year, the scheduling of movies to avoid waiting lines outside has been fantastic. HUGE improvement and big thumbs up! Earlier movie times might be one reason? Which is fine by us. Thanks you!
Movie: Really kind of sucked. Last 3 minutes of the movie - the "documentary conversation" at end was the best part.
From the ballots:
Lousy film.
From the ballots:
Very disappointing - had hoped for a mature, yet wise portrait of older lesbians. Really sad. AWFUL!

THE OWLS was difficult to get through.
