I love this movie, and am happy to see it being preserved. I've seen bits of it before somewhere, though I can't recall where.
Sadly I had to leave before the credits finished, as it ran VERY late, and I wanted to no miss any of the shorts in the next program.
Note to programmers: Be careful about how many community sponsors and speakers you have on an over-long movie with a small transition gap to the next film! The timing for programing this year has been great, with lots of time to transition, with this one exception. :)
@Woody - We had to work with Dryden's typical start time of 7pm so this one got pushed close to the other screening. But we didn't want to start the late movie at 10pm. =(
I LOVED this film. Once you got used to the fashion and hairstyles it didn't seem dated at all. It was a treat to see the restored version projected on the big screen as well. The color was so vivid it brought me right back to the era of the Village People, Saturday Night Fever and the Bee Gees. It's a shame it more people didn't come out to see this, especially younger people who are unaware of our history.
From the ballots:
Wonderful film. And the struggle goes on both personally and nationally.
From the ballots:
Thanks for keeping our history alive!
From the ballots:
A great retrospective -- and so very timely.
From the ballots:
Loved it. Such tenderness. Many of the interviewees seemed strongly familiar to me.
From the ballots:
One of my favorite Archive Nights!
From the ballots:
Thanks for bringing us this wonderful history of our lives!

That was amazing!
From the ballots:
Fascinating and important. Thanks!
From the ballots:
Too long but excellent.
From the ballots:
Excellent film. I will be interviewing senior LGBT persons at a conference I'm directing in Chautauqua, NY with Madelein Davis. Sept 16 to 18, 2011. Please refer Western, NY persons to me.
Michael's response:
Pat left a phone number which I obviously would rather not publish here. IF you are interested to be part of Pat's project and you are a senior LGBT from Western, NY, please email us at office@imageout.org.
From the ballots:
Thank you for showing this film. Stories of people are the essence of films.
From the ballots:
Thanks for the history -- need more contemporary documentaries shown. Excellent depiction of our history and lives.
From the ballots:
I wish kids would see this.
From the ballots:
Well done. Great choice. Very thought provoking. We have come a long way since 1978 and have yet a long way to go -- we will survive and overcome!
From the ballots:
A great message for the present day. Hope it could be available so many more could experience it.
From the ballots:
Thought-provoking and timely. Gays came a long way, yet history repeats itself.
From the ballots:
Very informative and making awareness even for myself.
From the ballots:
WOW! Well done!
From the ballots:
Really wonderful history. Thanks Michael for a great choice!
From the ballots:
What a treasure! Thanks for showing this film!
From the ballots:
Brilliantly relevant, historically and in modern times.
From the ballots:
As relevant today as the day it was made. Everyone should see it. So articulate.
From the ballots:
We need more of these films! Bring the gay pioneers back to Rochester. Educate our community!
From the ballots:
These movies preserve our history. Thank you for screening them.
From the ballots:
It was inspiring to hear the stories of the people interviewed. They were very brave human beings to be so open about themselves at that time.
From the ballots:
A reminder of our continued struggle! Rewarding and encouraging.
From the ballots:
Great film. Great entertainment.
From the ballots:
A great service to the truth in terms of personal accounts. I am so elated that the film was preserved and that I saw the 16mm transfer to 35mm. Looks great!
From the ballots:
Fabulous film! I'm so glad I saw it. It should be required for all young people to see.
From the ballots:
A 1st prize is a MUST!
From the ballots:
I wish I had seen this movie in 1977!
From the ballots:
Best film of the Festival!
From the ballots:
A look at ourselves thru another time and how much we still have to go. Thank you!
From the ballots:
What a chronicle of gay history! Very inspiring.
From the ballots:
Fair. Too much jumping around.
Michael's response:
Seriously?
From the ballots:
More thought provoking than other documentaries.
From the ballots:
Superb! One of the best documentaries I've seen.
From the ballots:
Excellent film.
Great history & very informative.
A "10"!
From the ballots:
Thank you ... a landmark film.
From the ballots:
Good political retrospective that is still poignant today especially in the light of the 3 suicides by gay teens recently.
From the ballots:
Excellent! Should be shown in schools and colleges and churches.
From the ballots:
So much on a personal level that you could equate to. Wish more could be exposed to this.
From the ballots:
Excellent. Should not be missed by anyone, gay or straight.
From the ballots:
Excellent. 85% - still relevant. But we need one after Lawrence vs Texas, June 26, 2003.
From the ballots:
MORE!
From the ballots:
Lots of interesting moments, but fragmented and sometimes confusing. On the whole, it is a sound and rewarding film.
From the ballots:
It gave a good idea of what the 50s were like, but it was too fragmented.
From the ballots:
Hopefully in our lifetime, that ignorance will be self erased of these issues. Out all my life practically 40 years, but a long ways, unfortunately, yet to go, before this ignorance will be solved.
From the ballots:
Glad films are being preserved and shown now.
From the ballots:
Interesting but a bit long-winded.
From the ballots:
Captured the progression of our liberation and I was still on the journey.
From the ballots:
Very informative.
From the ballots:
Good film. Important. Interesting to look back from this time to see how far acceptance of LGBT people has come, how far we have yet to go.
From the ballots:
So good. Loved it!
