Day 9: STANDING-N-TRUTH: BREAKING THE SILENCE

Standing-N-Truth: Breaking the Silence is probably one of the most important films in our roster of strong documentaries this year as it tackles the issues of sexuality in the African-American community, and how religion sometimes play a big role in the repression of homosexuality especially among African-American youths. This powerful discussion will hopefully continue from screen to the ImageOut stage with filmmaker Tim Daniels in attendance.

I loved how this film reminds us that AIDS is still a problem and that yes, even today people still die of AIDS. And the director, Tim...he's so handsome...lol...

WoW. Powerful film. I was glad to have seen it, and I applaud Tim Daniels for making this documentary. It was good that he could be present for a Q&A afterward...some of the questions and comments from the audiance members were wonderful.

This is by far the most emotional Q&A we've had in a while at ImageOut. Thanks Tim for being a part of the festival. Your film moved so many people.

Ballot comment from HS student:
I think this movie was really good, but it could have addressed the fact that HIV and AIDS are not just a tragedy of the African-American community.

Ballot comment:
Some good content but too much self-involvement by the filmmakers.

I did like this documentary a lot. The topics that they talked about are ones that need to be able to be accepted. Although people might not understand it, but hopefully we can learn to accept it. The openness that the movie allows the viewers to see is amazing, and I believe that anyone who doesn't know, or is worried about telling anyone about who they love, should watch this movie, and hopefully have their eyes opened to see that by accepting themselves and showing that they won't let what other people think bother them, they they will hopefully be able to finally live happily and hopefully feel full and complete.

Scheduled way too early -- lots of people go out on Fri nite; concerned that a lot of folks missed it that would have really liked it and benefited from it.

Brings up great issues that are not only relative to African Americans but also shows how much more they have to deal with. Shows the importance of being open and how much that can set us "free."

Ballot comment:
I was disappointed that the film didn't interview more working class people of color, or in general, those who were ignorant of being L,G,B,Q,T etc.

Ballot comment:
I mean yeah, it's like a "school film" but it's important to know this stuff. A little long for this kind of film though. Just a little bit like trim about 15 min or so.

Ballot comment:
Important to have the African American perspective and to talk about the repressiveness of most Black Churches.

Touches many real life issues. It brings to life what is really going on in the Black community. "A Real Problem" -- We need to stand in truth.

The BEST documentary to date. Great simple technique of listening to all these levels of pain and this perception of truth of one's identity.

Loved all of the people's different insight. I didn't know much about HIV/AIDS and this documentary shed new light on it. I wish more people could see this and learn more acceptance and become inspired to come out if they aren't straight.
